The ancient bond between the Awori and Owu kingdoms came alive in the United Kingdom as the Olota of the Ancient and Paramount Ottaland, Awori Kingdom, Oba Adeyemi Obalanlege, joined the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Abeokuta, Oba Adelola Saaka Matemilola, at the 2026 edition of the prestigious Odun Omo Olowu celebration held in London.
The grand cultural event, which took place at the Oasis Banqueting Hall in Barking, London, drew distinguished sons and daughters of Owu Kingdom from across the diaspora, alongside traditional rulers, eminent personalities, and admirers of Yoruba culture who gathered to celebrate the rich traditions and enduring heritage of the Owu people.
The event was further dignified by the presence of former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, fondly referred to as Ebora Owu, who attended as the Special Guest of Honour.
Also in attendance was the newly installed Yeye Moremi Oodua, Olufunso Amosun, who represented former Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, a respected son of the ancient Owu Kingdom.
Among other notable royal fathers present at the colourful gathering was Oba Hammed Adekunle Makama Oyelude, alongside several monarchs of Owu extraction and respected dignitaries from different parts of the world.
Observers at the event described the gathering as more than a cultural festival, noting that it reflected the enduring unity, brotherhood, and peaceful coexistence among Yoruba kingdoms, even beyond the shores of Nigeria.
The Olota, who attended the event alongside his revered queen, Olori Oloruntoyin Obalanlege, congratulated the Olowu of Owu and the entire Owu community for successfully hosting the 2026 edition of the Odun Omo Olowu celebration in the diaspora.
Speaking during the occasion, Kabiyesi Olota reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the cordial relationship between the Olota and Olowu royal institutions, stressing that the longstanding alliance between both ancient towns would continue to foster peace, cultural harmony, and mutual development.
Also accompanying the Olota to the historic celebration was the Asiwaju Bobaselu of the Ancient Ottaland, Awori Kingdom, Gbenga Olalekan Oso, whose presence underscored the shared commitment of both kingdoms toward preserving their historical ties and promoting Yoruba cultural values on the global stage.
The 2026 Odun Omo Olowu celebration in London ended on a high note with cultural displays, royal interactions, and renewed calls for unity among Yoruba communities across the world.
