In a strategic move to deepen democratic engagement, promote transparency, and enhance political accountability ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Ogun West Independent Chapel of the Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists on Friday, April 3, 2026, hosted the maiden edition of its Media Chat series tagged “Meet the Press.”
The three-day interactive programme, held at the Recreation Center, Ota, Ogun State, brought together prominent aspirants from Ado-Odo/Ota Federal Constituency in a dynamic and engaging interface with journalists and members of the public.
The “Meet the Press” initiative was designed to provide a credible platform for aspirants to present their manifestos, articulate their legislative priorities, demonstrate their competence and suitability for public office, and engage in direct dialogue with both the media and constituents. The programme underscores the Union’s commitment to strengthening democracy by fostering informed political participation and bridging the gap between political actors and the electorate.
The opening session featured notable senatorial aspirants including Hon. Nuru Aina Akinpelu, Hon. Olusegun Bolanle Gbeleyi, and High Chief Hon. Olayiwola Taiwo, all of whom participated in separate, well-structured sessions conducted at designated times.
During their appearances, the aspirants engaged in robust and insightful discussions, presenting their programmes and proposed projects aimed at transforming Ogun West Senatorial District. They addressed critical issues such as infrastructure development, economic revitalization, education, youth empowerment, security, and social welfare.
The sessions were highly interactive, with journalists asking probing and thought-provoking questions to clarify policy positions and implementation strategies. The aspirants responded with clarity, depth, and confidence, reflecting strong preparedness and a clear understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the district.
To ensure fairness, orderliness, and effective engagement, each aspirant was assigned a specific time slot and appeared independently. This structured approach allowed for detailed scrutiny and meaningful dialogue, enhancing the credibility of the exercise.
Aspirants were permitted to attend with their supporters; however, all participants were required to maintain discipline, order, and decorum throughout the sessions, contributing to a professional and conducive atmosphere.
The programme has also attracted extensive media coverage from national television and radio stations, as well as numerous online media platforms. Daily live broadcasts are ensuring that the engagements reach a wide and diverse audience across Ogun State and beyond, amplifying their impact and relevance.
As the programme continues, the next session scheduled for Saturday, April 4, 2026, will feature House of Representatives aspirants, while Monday, April 6, 2026, will host House of Assembly aspirants, bringing the current phase of engagements in Ado-Odo/Ota Federal Constituency to a close.
Following the conclusion of activities on Monday, the Union will extend the “Meet the Press” initiative to other federal constituencies that make up Ogun West Senatorial District, further broadening the reach and impact of the programme across the region.
Overall, the sessions have revealed a pool of aspirants brimming with innovative ideas and a shared determination to liberate and reposition Ogun West Senatorial District for sustainable growth and development.
The Ogun West Independent Chapel, through this landmark initiative, has once again demonstrated leadership and innovation in promoting ethical journalism, participatory democracy, and good governance. As the “Meet the Press” series progresses, it is set to become a defining platform in shaping political discourse and democratic accountability in Ogun West ahead of the 2027 elections.
