In a defining moment for community-driven healthcare in Nigeria, His Royal Majesty, Alayeluwa Oba (Dr.) Kehinde Gbadewole Olugbenle, the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, has thrown his weight behind a major federal push to strengthen primary healthcare at the grassroots.
The revered monarch was among distinguished traditional rulers present on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at the inauguration of the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council Primary Health Care Committee. The high-level ceremony, hosted by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, took place at the Abuja Continental Hotel and brought together key stakeholders committed to reshaping healthcare delivery in underserved communities.
With the theme “Strengthening Community Leadership for Improved Health Outcomes,” the event underscored a growing recognition within government circles: that traditional institutions remain powerful allies in influencing public behavior and advancing development at the local level. The initiative signals a renewed federal commitment to harnessing this influence in tackling critical health challenges.
At the heart of the newly inaugurated committee is a clear mandate—to bridge the gap between policy and people. Spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), the committee is designed to integrate the authority and reach of traditional rulers into national health strategies. From boosting immunization campaigns to addressing maternal and child mortality, disease prevention, and health education, the committee is poised to drive impactful change where it matters most.
Oba Olugbenle’s inclusion in the committee, in his capacity as Chairman of the Ogun State Council of Obas, adds significant weight to the initiative. Known for his progressive leadership and deep-rooted connection to his people, the Olu of Ilaro reaffirmed his commitment to advancing policies that will strengthen healthcare delivery systems and improve the quality of life across Ogun State and beyond.
His participation not only reflects the growing synergy between government and traditional leadership but also reinforces a vital truth: sustainable development begins at the grassroots, where trusted voices can inspire meaningful action.
