Prominent traditional rulers, political leaders and distinguished personalities from across Africa were honoured on Friday night at the African-Asian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (AACCI) Africa Walk 2026 Summit and Awards Gala held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The gala, which marked the grand finale of the five-day Africa Walk 2026 Trade Mission held from July 6 to 10, celebrated individuals whose leadership, public service and contributions have advanced socio-economic development, regional cooperation and sustainable growth across Africa.
Among the award recipients were His Majesty, Professor Adeyemi Obalanlege, Ph.D. (Lanlege Ekun II, Arole Iganmode, Olofin Apesin Olode), the Olota of the Ancient and Paramount Ottaland, Awori Kingdom, and His Royal Majesty Oba Saaka Adelola Matemilola, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom. Both monarchs were recognised for their exceptional leadership, commitment to peacebuilding, promotion of cultural heritage, community development and their roles in fostering economic and social progress within their domains.
The event also honoured former President of Malawi, Dr. Joyce Banda, in recognition of her distinguished service to Africa, particularly her commitment to democratic governance, women’s empowerment, inclusive leadership and sustainable development. Dr. Banda remains one of Africa’s most respected stateswomen and the continent’s second female Head of State.
Former First Lady of Ogun State and Moremi Oodua, Her Excellency Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, was equally recognised for her humanitarian initiatives and sustained contributions to social development and the empowerment of women and vulnerable groups.
Speaking during the gala, the President of the AACCI Nigeria Chapter, Dr. Akintoye Akindele, CFA, DBA, FICA, described Africa Walk 2026 as a strategic platform designed to deepen trade, investment and economic partnerships between Africa and Asia.
According to him, the summit provided an avenue for business leaders, investors, diplomats, policymakers and industry stakeholders from both continents to exchange ideas, establish strategic partnerships and explore investment opportunities capable of accelerating economic transformation and shared prosperity.
Dr. Akindele commended the support of traditional institutions and acknowledged the invaluable roles played by the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, the Olota of the Ancient and Paramount Ottaland, Awori Kingdom, and other eminent personalities whose encouragement contributed to the success of the summit.
The week-long programme featured high-level business engagements, investment forums, networking sessions and policy dialogues aimed at strengthening commercial ties between African and Asian economies while promoting innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainable development.
The colourful gala reached its climax with an electrifying performance by internationally acclaimed musician, producer and songwriter, Cobhams Asuquo, whose captivating blend of soulful vocals and instrumental brilliance provided a fitting conclusion to the prestigious international gathering.
The AACCI Africa Walk Summit has continued to grow as one of the continent’s leading platforms for promoting international trade, investment, cultural diplomacy and economic collaboration, reinforcing Africa’s position as an emerging destination for global partnerships and sustainable development.
