Residents of Ilogbo Community in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State have been thrown into mourning following a deadly attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen, which reportedly claimed the lives of six people, left others injured, and resulted in the abduction of three residents.
The attack, which reportedly occurred at about 11:30 p.m. on Friday in the Olugba area of Ilogbo, was said to have been carried out by armed men suspected to be herdsmen who were allegedly moving with hundreds of cattle. According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants invaded the community while many residents were asleep, opening fire and causing widespread panic.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said the attackers launched a coordinated assault before security agencies could be alerted.
“We were asleep when we suddenly heard gunshots. Before anyone could contact the security agencies, the attackers had already overrun the community, killing several people and abducting others,” the source said.
Among those reportedly killed were Mr. Gboyega Oluwasegun, believed to be in his mid-forties; Mr. Adeyemi Jacob, a father of three in his fifties; and Mr. Felix Ogunsile, an elderly resident. The identities of all the victims had not been officially confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
The source also disclosed that Pastor Magbedelo Sunday was reported missing by members of his family, raising fears that he may be among those abducted during the attack.
In addition to the killings and abductions, two women were reportedly raped during the incident. They are currently receiving medical treatment at the Ilogbo Primary Health Centre.
When contacted for confirmation, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola, stated that the incident had been reported to the Police Command but noted that full details were still being compiled as investigations continue.
The tragic incident has heightened concerns over the growing security challenges facing rural communities in Ogun State and has cast a shadow over previous peace-building efforts initiated by the Onilogbo of Ilogbo, HRM Oba Dr. Samuel Olufemi Ojugbele, who had convened several meetings between the Fulani community and host residents to promote peaceful coexistence in Ilogbo and neighbouring communities.
As of the time of this report, security operatives were said to have intensified efforts to restore calm, while residents called on both the Ogun State Government and security agencies to strengthen security presence in the area, rescue the abducted victims, and bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
