The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun West Independent Chapel, led by its Chairman, Comrade Olatunji Egbewunmi, has paid a courtesy visit to the Area Commander, Sango-Ota Area Command, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Olusola Oladele, at her office.
The delegation, led by Comrade Egbewunmi and accompanied by the Chapel Secretary, Comrade Fashina Olugbenga, used the visit to strengthen the relationship between the media and the police, while exploring areas of mutual cooperation in promoting peace, security and responsible public communication.
Receiving the NUJ delegation, ACP Oladele emphasised the importance of credible, factual and balanced journalism, urging journalists to always ensure that reports are properly verified and that all relevant sides are given fair opportunity to respond, particularly when reporting security-related matters.
She stressed that the media remains an important partner in the task of keeping the public informed and promoting peaceful coexistence, adding that responsible reportage could contribute significantly to public confidence in security institutions.
The Area Commander also reaffirmed her commitment to maintaining an open and professional relationship with journalists and to providing necessary access to information within the limits of operational security.
During the engagement, Comrade Egbewunmi commended the Area Command for its engagement with the community and expressed the chapel’s readiness to foster a professional relationship between journalists and security agencies.
The Chapel Secretary, Comrade Fashina Olugbenga, also emphasised the responsibility of journalists to uphold the ethics of the profession, noting that accuracy, fairness and verification remain essential to preserving public trust in the media.
The visit provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss the security situation within the Sango-Ota axis and the importance of sustained collaboration among security agencies, journalists, community leaders and residents.
ACP Oladele’s tenure at Sango-Ota has featured emphasis on community policing and stakeholder engagement. Previous reports have highlighted her advocacy for community-oriented policing and Alternative Dispute Resolution, as well as her call for officers to maintain professionalism, discipline and civility in their dealings with members of the public.
The engagement with the NUJ delegation therefore reinforced the shared responsibility of the media and security agencies in building a safer, better-informed and more peaceful society.
The visit ended with both parties expressing their commitment to maintaining regular communication and strengthening cooperation in the public interest.
For the NUJ Ogun West Independent Chapel, the meeting was another step towards building constructive relationships with institutions and stakeholders whose activities have direct implications for the security and wellbeing of residents across Ogun West.
