In a moment steeped in tradition, pride, and cultural significance, Chief Otunba Akeem Adegboyega Adigun, widely known as Socopao, was formally installed as the Bobagunwa of Ketu-Land in the Republic of Benin—an honour that resonates far beyond borders and generations.
A distinguished son of Agosasa in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, Chief Adigun’s elevation marks more than a personal milestone; it symbolizes the enduring unity and shared heritage of the Yoruba people across West Africa. The revered title of Bobagunwa, deeply rooted in Yoruba aristocratic tradition, is reserved for individuals of exceptional influence, integrity, and service to society.
The grand installation ceremony, held at the historic palace of the Alaketu of Ketu-Land, was a vibrant display of culture, royalty, and heritage. The event drew an impressive gathering of traditional rulers, dignitaries, scholars, and cultural custodians from Nigeria and the Benin Republic, reflecting the deep ancestral bonds that continue to unite Yoruba communities across modern national boundaries.
Adding regal distinction to the occasion was the presence of His Royal Highness, Oba Kehinde Gbadewole Olugbenle (Agunloye IV), the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, who led a high-powered delegation from Nigeria. He was joined by prominent personalities including respected businessman Alhaji Ibrahim Egungbohun Dende and renowned historian Chief Professor Anthony Asiwaju, alongside a host of eminent Yoruba monarchs and chiefs.
Chief Adigun’s conferment is widely regarded as a well-earned recognition of his longstanding commitment to philanthropy, grassroots development, and entrepreneurial excellence. Over the years, he has built a reputation not only as a successful business magnate but also as a compassionate benefactor dedicated to uplifting communities and preserving cultural identity.
His installation as Bobagunwa of Ketu-Land serves as a powerful reminder of the relevance of traditional institutions in modern society—institutions that continue to uphold values, foster unity, and celebrate heritage in a rapidly changing world.
For the people of Agosasa, Ipokia, Ogun West, and the global Yoruba diaspora, this historic honour is a source of immense pride. It stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Yoruba culture and the timeless recognition of those who embody its highest ideals.
